Caterpillar Launches Next-Generation Electric Mining Truck Lineup at MINEXPO 2026

2026-03-06

Against the backdrop of global decarbonization and the mining industry’s urgent transition to sustainable operations, Caterpillar Inc., the world’s leading manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, made a landmark debut at MINEXPO 2026, North America’s premier mining exhibition, held at the Las Vegas Convention Center from September 13 to 19, 2026. Under the theme “Building a Sustainable Future: Electric Mining Solutions for Net-Zero Operations,” the company unveiled its most comprehensive lineup of zero-emission mining trucks and technologies, underscoring its leadership in the global shift to low-carbon heavy machinery.
Strategic Product Showcase: Zero-Emission Innovation for Global Mining Caterpillar’s 3,500-square-meter booth at MINEXPO 2026 featured 22 cutting-edge machines, including 8 new electric models specifically engineered for large-scale mining operations in Australia, Chile, and Canada. Key

highlights included: Caterpillar 798 Electric Haul Truck: A 360-tonne capacity model powered by a 1.2MWh solid-state battery pack, delivering up to 12 hours of continuous operation and a 2-hour fast-charging capability. Designed for open-pit mining, it features a regenerative braking system that recovers up to 25% of kinetic energy, reducing energy consumption and operational costs.
Caterpillar R1700 XE Electric Loader: A compact underground mining loader with a 480kWh LFP battery, offering a 30% increase in energy efficiency compared to diesel equivalents. Equipped with autonomous navigation capabilities, it is tailored for narrow-vein mining operations, enhancing safety and productivity.
Caterpillar MineStar Edge: An advanced telematics platform that integrates real-time battery health monitoring, energy consumption analytics, and predictive maintenance for electric mining fleets. The platform enables operators to optimize total cost of ownership (TCO) and extend component lifespans by up to 20%. Market Expansion and Sustainability Initiatives Building on its strategic focus on deepening global market penetration, Caterpillar announced key initiatives at MINEXPO 2026:
Battery Swapping Network: The company confirmed plans to deploy 50 battery swapping stations across major mining regions by 2028, enabling 10-minute battery swaps for electric haul trucks and eliminating downtime in remote operations.
Carbon Neutrality Partnerships: Caterpillar signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Rio Tinto to collaborate on the deployment of 100 electric mining trucks by 2030, supporting the mining giant’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
Circular Economy Commitment: The company launched a battery recycling program, targeting 95% recycling of lithium-ion batteries from electric heavy machinery by 2030, reducing reliance on virgin materials and minimizing environmental impact.
Industry Leadership and Future Vision “At Caterpillar, we believe electric heavy machinery is not just a trend, but a cornerstone of the mining industry’s sustainable future,” said Jim Umpleby, Chairman and CEO of Caterpillar Inc., during a keynote address at the exhibition. “Our presence at MINEXPO 2026 underscores our commitment to delivering innovative, reliable, and cost-effective solutions that enable our customers to meet their net-zero targets without compromising on performance or productivity.”
The company’s booth drew over 18,000 visitors during the exhibition, including industry leaders, government officials, and potential clients from 60+ countries. Live demonstrations of the 798 electric haul truck and R1700 XE loader received particular acclaim, highlighting the machines’ power, precision, and environmental benefits. As the global demand for electric heavy machinery continues to surge, Caterpillar remains at the forefront of innovation, driving the transition to a low-carbon industrial economy.
